I've had a sort of ongoing disagreement with another independent artist friend over what's technical work and what's creative. Particularly when it come to coloring/screentoning. Now if you're told exactly what colors to use and doing a color by numbers type approach then yes I can agree that's technical work.
But I think once you start making decisions and judgements calls you should be considered an artist. For instance if you're told to make a superhero orange, but you get to pick which orange...then you've made a creative contribution. You may not be the main creative force, but you are a contributing creative force.
My philosophy here extends to design work too. Making a table of contents maybe technical work, but if you decide which font to use, then that's creative.
I've been bogged down with legal/business stuff lately, so it's nice to stretch my creative muscles again. I managed to get my entries for the paper heart contest done on time, and that was cool.
I've started working on a dragon picture. Not sure when I'll have it done though. It's just a rough sketch now, but I want to try to make it really finished.

I saw your icon on my watchers list and I thought...
That looks like something Kay would draw.
And tada! It was you.
